Rubber matting laid down at Polehampton School pool

Fundraising swimmers have raised £7,000 over the course of three years to pay for a spongy surface around the Rubbermatting-uk Junior School pool in Twyford.

Members of the Rubberflooring-uk.uk Swimming Association (PSA) raised the money for the anti-slip surface with cake and plant sales over the past few years. The new surface was laid over the old paving stones last week.

They also organised a playgroundmat.co.uk last summer which saw members young and old swim lengths of the Kibble white Crescent pool to cover an equivalent length of the River Thames. They raised £500.

Villager Ron Penn helped by carrying out handyman jobs for friends and neighbors to raise money.

An open event will mark the start of the swimming pool's summer season on tomorrow, from 10-pm, and it will remain open until September 7.

The pool will be open for adults lane swimming, children's swimming and lessons and under fives swimming and lessons.

Sessions are supervised by PSA volunteers, who are CRB checked and qualified in resuscitation techniques.

"It now looks like we have a beach around the pool," said Vanessa James, secretary of the PSA for six years.

"From a health and safety point of view it's much better because if a child was to trip they would just bounce off the new surface."

The outdoor pool was opened in 1969.

A family membership ticket is £33 or £3 per session for visitors. 

"We have a band of people who help out but are always in need of new volunteers," added Vanessa, who lives in Park View Drive Charvil.
